Lucia Dhlakama – Placement Reflection

Lucia works in Aged Care and wanted to increase her knowledge and confidence with palliative care and end of life care education.  Lucia believes that everyone deserves to die with dignity and should be pain free.  She also believes that families need to be empowered to ask more questions about their loved ones life limiting illnesses and care and this was another motivation she had to attend placement.

During her placement Lucia learned more about referral processes for palliative clients so that she can connect residents in her service to more specialist palliative care.  She also learned how to apply symptom management assessment tools for residents of her service.

Through her placement she was also grateful to meet team members from palliative care who were Pastoral Care workers, social workers and dieticians as they provided her with more thinking that would increase resident care outcomes when she returned to her workplace.
