Renee Kelly – Placement Reflection

Renee attended a PEPA Placement with the goals to learn more about communication in palliative care and end of life care.  Renee observed many instances where communication was focused on patient medication, chemotherapy drugs and uses, Burdens of disease, Advanced care plans, and pain and symptom management.  Renee also had time observing the work in hospice and really felt that she observed extensive examples of verbal and non verbal communication that was very supportive for her confidence in communication skills as she returns to her workplace.

Renee also learned more about the Palliative Care Outcomes Collaborative (PCOC) and specifically how to use their Symptom Assessment Scale (SAS) which she is planning to introduce as a tool for palliative patients that she cares for in her current workplace.
